A New Ferry Has Started Her Service at Madeline Island

The MV La Pointe, Wisconsin’s Madeline Island Ferry’s newest vessel, was recently dedicated after a two-year journey to the western Lake Superior getaway. It can carry almost 150 passengers and up to 22 cars.

The 102-foot vessel was purchased in 2017 as the B.L. DeBarry, a former State of Texas ferry, which was found in a Chicago shipyard in the preliminary stages of being reconfigured to use as a river cruise boat.

The boat was then remodeled at the Fincantieri Ship Yard in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Even though it was in good condition when it was bought, it received a new pilothouse, engines, generators, hydraulic ramps, electronics and more. It is now double-ended, with an engine, propeller and rudder forward on the bow and stern. It received its new name from the town of La Pointe on Madeline Island.
